More budget won’t fix this…

When marketing performance dips, the immediate reaction is often

‘We need more budget’

But more spend isn’t always the solution. In many cases, marketing teams don’t need bigger budgets, they need better support and better leadership.

Modern marketers are spinning more plates than ever

From paid media to CRM to content to reporting and analysis, let alone internal stakeholder management. When teams are overstretched, adding budget without fixing underlying issues can simply create more pressure, not better results.

Without the right structure, additional budget can lead to inefficient campaigns, poor optimisation, low ROI and ultimately, team burnout. Often, if the team lacks time, strategy, or specialist expertise, bigger budgets just magnify existing problems.

More spend can amplify existing problems

Without the right foundations, extra budget can lead to inefficient campaigns, poor optimisation, lower ROI and burnout. Often they just magnify what’s already broken.

Five questions to ask before increasing spend.

  • Is the team properly resourced?

  • Are processes efficient?

  • Is there strategic leadership?

  • Are sales and marketing aligned?

  • Is specialist support needed?

Stronger infrastructure and smarter support will almost always drive better results than extra ad spend alone. I have worked at many event organisations and whilst not always, so often I have seen marketing teams left to fend for themselves. And this leads to less inspiration, less creativity, less thinking outside the box and more ‘I need to get this email out today but I don’t care what the content of it is’. Whilst I don’t expect all organisations to have ‘inspiration pods’ or table tennis tables for staff to ‘relax and be more creative’ marketers are human and when people feel supported, motivated, and properly led, they produce better work, smarter ideas and stronger campaigns.

More budget can help, but only if the right foundations are already in place. Sometimes, the real growth driver isn’t bigger spend, it’s giving marketing teams the support they need to perform at their best.

As always, great marketing starts with better communication.
